To improve the teaching proficiency of the teachers, our college therefore invited Mr. Phil Green, director of the international curriculum and cooperation department, school of education, university of Southampton, to give a specific lecture on April 10^th.  Dr. Tao Tao, dean of the International College and more than twenty teachers and graduates from the two colleges (the International College and the Overseas College) attended the lecture. Lecturer Li Zhen presided over the lecture.

Mr. Phil Green had ever served in the British army before joining the university of Southampton in 2012. His working practices cross oceans covers areas like the South America, the South Asian, the Southeast Aisan and the Middle East, which has gained him diversified international working experience. The topic of the lecture is The Challenge for Teachers’ Career Development: How to Improve Teaching Proficiency. In the lecture, Mr. Phil Green referred to the Brexit to demonstrate the fact that today’s world is in the constant change, and the higher education is no exception as well. In order to cope with these challenges, every teacher should be made aware of the importance of improving their own teaching ability. He pointed out the fact that nowadays at employed teachers on the basis of their academic achievement   while ignoring their authentic teaching ability in classrooms. Concerning this, the Southampton university therefore decided to offered intensive teaching trainings to all of its new teachers, making sure that they have been equipped with the fundamental teaching knowledge and principles before they started the real teaching. Other than that, he also introduced the five themes Southampton university has been practicing in improving its teaching quality, that is, student feedback, colleague collaboration, learning assessment, shared innovation and reflective practice.

Teaching quality is the ‘lifeline’ of our two colleges. We have always attached great importance to the improvement of our teachers’ professional skills and teaching quality. Mr. Phil Green's lecture has brought our two colleges the advanced ideas from world’s top 100 universities and the experience in the areas of teaching quality management and has received heated response. Some teachers also communicated with Phil Green in terms of the network teaching resources, the influencing factors of teaching quality, peer-lecture evaluation mechanism and other issues.
